Origins
The region from which this delicacy comes needs little introduction to connoisseurs of fine teas. The foothills of the Himalayas in the northeastern part of India have been covered with tea gardens since the 19th century. The challenging terrain and specific natural conditions, plus the experience of the local farmers, have given rise to a product that the whole world is longing for. Available sources indicate that over 80 plantations thrive in Darjeeling, planted mainly with Chinese tea trees of the Assam variety. Risheehat Garden can be found about 14km from Darjeeling town.
It is considered one of the most prestigious. It grows tea under organic farming conditions on about 260 hectares. The tea plants grow surrounded by orange trees, flowers and vegetable beds. It gives their leaves a unique fragrance. The gross yield of the plantation was around 180t per year. But the year before last, Darjeeling was hit by a huge workers' strike, which caused a reduction in tea production. Risheehat translates as "home of the saints".
The garden was founded by the British in the 19th century and, apart from Darjeeling, also produces orthodox black, green and speciality teas. Its slopes are among the steepest, with tea trees harvested from March to November. In 1955, the garden became part of the Stöcke Risheehat company, which specialises in organic farming and protects biodiversity.
